Benjamin Moore Sheen Guide

Benjamin Moore Sheen Guide: Choosing the Right Finish

Choosing the right paint colour is important, but the sheen can change how that colour looks and performs. The same Benjamin Moore colour can feel softer, brighter, richer, or shinier depending on the finish you choose.

At Colour Land Paint in Burlington, we help homeowners, painters, designers, and contractors compare Benjamin Moore sheens in person before they buy.

What Is Paint Sheen?

Paint sheen means how much light the painted surface reflects.

Lower sheens look softer and can help hide minor wall imperfections. Higher sheens reflect more light. Washability and durability depend on the paint formula as well as the sheen, surface preparation and curing time.

The best sheen depends on the room, surface, lighting, traffic, cleaning needs, and the look you want.

Benjamin Moore sheen comparison chart

Use this chart to compare common interior finishes, then choose a paint product suited to the surface. The available sheens and exact level of reflection depend on the paint line.

Finish Reflection Common starting point What to check
Flat Very little Ceilings and quieter spaces Cleaning needs and the intended surface.
Matte / Ulti-Matte Very low Interior walls with a soft look Choose a washable wall formula where regular cleaning matters.
Eggshell Gentle glow Living areas and hallways Compare the specific product's cleaning performance.
Pearl / Satin Noticeable glow Doors, trim and some wall finishes Names vary by product. Cabinets need a cabinet-suitable coating.
Semi-Gloss Brighter shine Trim, doors and cabinetry Surface preparation: reflected light can reveal flaws.
High-Gloss Strong reflection Feature doors and architectural details A smooth surface, careful preparation and suitable product.

Sheen is only part of the choice. More shine does not automatically mean better performance than a premium matte. For bathrooms, cabinets or frequent cleaning, check the coating's intended use and care instructions. Bring room photos or your existing paint label to Colour Land Paint in Burlington so we can help you compare the options.

General finish guidance: Benjamin Moore's guide to choosing a paint finish. The sections below explain product and room considerations.

Flat and Premium Matte Finishes

Flat and matte finishes both have low reflectance, but they are not interchangeable. Flat ceiling paint is chosen primarily for a low-reflection finish; a premium matte wall paint can combine a soft appearance with washability.

Best for:

  • Ceilings
  • Bedrooms
  • Living rooms
  • Dining rooms
  • Surfaces with imperfections

Do not rule out matte solely because a room needs cleaning. AURA Interior Matte is scrubbable and scuff-resistant; Regal Select Ulti-Matte offers stain-release technology; SCUFF-X Matte is designed for scuff resistance in busy spaces. Choose the specific product for the room instead of assuming more shine always means better performance.

For a humid bathroom, consider a product designed for that environment, such as AURA Bath & Spa Matte. A flat ceiling paint and a washable matte wall paint serve different purposes.

Eggshell Finish

Eggshell is a common interior wall finish with a gentle sheen. Compare the washability of the specific paint line: eggshell is not automatically more durable than every premium matte product.

Best for:

  • Bedrooms
  • Living rooms
  • Hallways
  • Dining rooms
  • General interior walls

Eggshell is often a good balance when you want walls to look smooth without too much shine.

Pearl / Satin Finish

Pearl and satin finishes add a noticeable glow. For cabinets, doors or trim, select a coating suited to that surface; sheen alone does not make an ordinary wall paint a cabinet coating.

Best for:

  • Cabinets
  • Trim
  • Doors
  • High-touch interior surfaces where a more durable finish is wanted

Pearl and satin finishes can make a colour look a little richer because they reflect more light than matte or eggshell.

Is pearl finish the same as satin?

Pearl and satin are similar sheen descriptions, but do not assume that two products will have an identical finish because their sheen names sound alike. Check the specific paint line and its available finishes before choosing.

For an existing wall, door or cabinet, bring the original can or a clear photo of its label to Colour Land. Matching the product and sheen as well as the colour gives us a better starting point than choosing by “pearl” or “satin” alone.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Semi-gloss is more reflective and is commonly used on trim, doors and cabinetry. Choose an appropriate coating for the surface and allow it to cure before regular cleaning.

Best for:

  • Trim
  • Doors
  • Baseboards
  • Cabinets
  • High-touch areas

Semi-gloss can look sharp and clean, but it can also show surface imperfections more than lower-sheen finishes.

High-Gloss Finish

High-gloss is very reflective and dramatic. It can be beautiful on specialty surfaces, but preparation must be excellent because gloss shows flaws.

Best for:

  • Accent trim
  • Specialty doors
  • Furniture-style finishes
  • Decorative details

High-gloss is not usually the first choice for large imperfect wall surfaces.

Best Sheen by Room

Here is a simple starting point:

  • Ceilings: flat
  • Bedrooms: matte or eggshell
  • Living rooms: matte or eggshell
  • Hallways: AURA Matte, Regal Select Ulti-Matte, SCUFF-X Matte or a suitable washable eggshell
  • Kitchen walls: AURA Matte, Regal Select Ulti-Matte, SCUFF-X Matte or a suitable washable eggshell
  • Bathrooms: AURA Bath & Spa Matte, or Regal Select Eggshell where appropriate; both offer mildew-resistant coatings. Address ventilation and moisture problems first
  • Trim and doors: pearl/satin or semi-gloss
  • Cabinets: a cabinet-suitable coating such as ADVANCE Pearl or Semi-Gloss
  • Exterior trim or siding: low lustre or flat depending on product
  • Exterior doors: soft gloss/satin or semi-gloss depending on product

Colour Land tip: Before choosing sheen, think about the room’s lighting, how often the surface will be touched, and how smooth the wall or trim is. A higher sheen can make a colour look brighter and can also show more imperfections.

Why Sheen Looks Different in Store vs Home

Paint sheen can look different depending on your home’s lighting, wall texture, room direction, and the time of day.

A colour that looks soft in store lighting may look brighter or shinier on a wall with strong natural light. That is why it helps to compare samples and sheen options before committing.

Read our Burlington lighting and paint-colour testing guide to compare daylight and evening conditions.

Colour samples are not finish-performance tests

Standard Benjamin Moore 236 mL colour sample pots use an eggshell formula for choosing colour. They do not represent the durability or exact sheen of every finished paint. Compare sheen displays, or ask about testing the intended product and finish separately.

Our paint tester and sampling guide explains how to use small testers, larger sample pots and painted boards to compare colour in your room before choosing the final product and sheen.

For room-by-room product choices, use our paint-selection guide. Follow the selected paint's curing and care instructions before washing it.

FAQ

What paint sheen is best for walls?

Matte and eggshell are both useful starting points. A premium washable matte can suit busy rooms; choose the product for the surface, cleaning needs and lighting rather than judging durability by sheen alone.

What sheen should I use for trim and doors?

Pearl, satin and semi-gloss are common choices. Select a product intended for trim or doors, then choose the level of reflection you prefer and follow its curing instructions.

What sheen is best for kitchen cabinets?

For ADVANCE in Canada, Pearl provides a softer reflection and Semi-Gloss adds more shine. The coating, preparation and curing time matter as much as the sheen. See our cabinet paint guide before choosing.

Does paint sheen change the way a colour looks?

Yes. Higher sheens reflect more light and can make a colour look brighter or richer, while lower sheens look softer.

Should bathrooms use a higher sheen?

Not necessarily. AURA Bath & Spa is a matte product designed for humid rooms. Choose an appropriate bathroom coating, address moisture and ventilation, and follow the product instructions rather than automatically choosing the highest sheen.
